has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>In educational settings, the term \u201cgamification\u201d is still frequently used as something of a buzzword. This is likely because implementing gamification is seen as an easier alternative to fundamentally rethinking course content, pedagogy, or the nature of education itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, I was also drawn to its potential around 2012 and attempted to implement gamification in my own classes (York, 2012). I allowed students to choose from a range of tasks and complete them in a way that suited their own learning styles. However, rather than boosting motivation, the result was that students overwhelmingly selected only the simplest tasks. In other words, they avoided more challenging assignments altogether.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This kind of behavior is a well-documented side effect of extrinsic rewards (Hashiguchi, 1982). When the desire to avoid losing a reward becomes strong, learners tend to avoid the risk of failure by choosing safe, easy tasks that guarantee a payoff. In this way, while gamification may appear effective on the surface, it can in fact lead to unintended consequences in learner behavior. In this article, I want to introduce the idea of &#8220;playful&#8221; or &#8220;ludic&#8221; education is what we need. Not gamification. I&#8217;ll also introduce some examples of how this can be done. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Duolingo<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Before we even step into the classroom, the first app that comes to mind when we talk about gamification is probably <em>Duolingo<\/em>. It\u2019s often described as a service that \u201cincorporates game-like elements.\u201d But can we really call this a <em>game<\/em>? And does introducing these kinds of services into education truly improve the quality of learning?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently, Duolingo has come under heavy criticism. I believe that at the heart of this is the structure of gamification itself. The <em>raison d\u2019\u00eatre<\/em> of gamification is to control and manipulate user behavior, typically for purposes like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>attracting more users<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>increasing repeat engagement<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>boosting customer satisfaction<br>\u2192 all ultimately to influence behavior for profit<br>\u2192 user engagement<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s important to note here is that <em>helping users learn something<\/em> isn\u2019t built into this structure at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, Reddit is full of posts from people who admit they open the app just to maintain their <em>streak<\/em> (see: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/duolingo\/comments\/qu8u2u\/i_am_considering_intentionally_losing_my_duolingo\/\">1<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/duolingo\/comments\/1hd9zz0\/going_for_the_streaks_but_not_truly_learning\/\">2<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/duolingo\/comments\/1lgcaw6\/do_yall_use_duolingo_for_learning_a_language_or\/\">3<\/a>). In other words, keeping up the streak becomes the goal itself, rather than the learning. Sure, one might argue: \u201cWell, if they\u2019re opening the app for the streak, isn\u2019t that at least contributing to some language learning?\u201d But the fact that their motivation for opening the app is <em>streak maintenance<\/em>, not learning, points to a serious issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s even more problematic is that once someone loses their streak, their motivation often collapses and they stop using the app altogether (again, see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/duolingo\/comments\/1an7j15\/would_you_still_use_duolingo_if_you_lost_your\/\">Reddit<\/a>). So where was their \u201cmotivation to learn\u201d in the first place?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As scholars like Nicholson (2012), Pink (2009), and Deci (1971) have argued:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Take away the reward, and the behavior disappears.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>If this is what happens when users download an app on their own and engage with it voluntarily, what happens when we try to control learning behavior in schools with extrinsic rewards?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This blog post points out the problems of gamification in educational settings and proposes a more human-centered approach based on <em>playfulness<\/em> (<em>ludic<\/em> learning).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Problems with Gamification<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A superficial approach that doesn\u2019t change the structure of education<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.yorkgamelab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Add-a-subheading-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-459 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yorkgamelab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Add-a-subheading-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.yorkgamelab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Add-a-subheading-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.yorkgamelab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Add-a-subheading-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/www.yorkgamelab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Add-a-subheading-18x10.png 18w, https:\/\/www.yorkgamelab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Add-a-subheading-600x338.png 600w, https:\/\/www.yorkgamelab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Add-a-subheading.png 1280w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1024px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1024\/576;\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Gamification vs. game-based learning<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Gamification doesn\u2019t change the core systems of education (such as grading systems, attendance rules, or assignment-centered learning). Instead, it adds external \u201cdecorations\u201d like points, badges, and leaderboards. This turns students into objects of behavioral control, and leaves teachers in the role of managers. It doesn\u2019t get to the heart of human relationships or motivation in education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Game scholar Ian Bogost (2014) calls this <em>dashboardification<\/em> \u2014 it\u2019s not a game at all, just something that looks game-like on the surface, built for tracking, quantifying, and managing behavior. It leaves out what makes a game a game: choice, conflict, and meaningful activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the way, I don\u2019t think dashboards are inherently bad, nor do I think they shouldn\u2019t be used in education. Students <em>do<\/em> need feedback and ways to measure their progress. But this has nothing to do with the core elements of games, and I don\u2019t think we should hype it up as \u201cgame-inspired learning.\u201d And just having a dashboard doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019re offering something educationally meaningful. Even if you have clear criteria and feedback, what really matters is the content of the lessons, the curriculum, and of course, the pedagogical approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Encouraging competition and comparison<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Many gamification systems are built on competition \u2014 points and leaderboards are the clearest example. While this kind of extrinsic motivation might work for some students, for many it\u2019s exhausting, discouraging, or demotivating. Especially in education, what\u2019s needed is not comparison or competition, but spaces where learners feel safe and can pursue intrinsic motivation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Students can tell: \u201cThis isn\u2019t really a game.\u201d<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"3\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if a teacher enthusiastically announces, \u201cWe\u2019re going to play a fun game today!\u201d if it\u2019s just an assignment wrapped in a points system, students will see right through it. It can even damage trust and undermine their motivation for learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Aren\u2019t the \u201csix elements of gamification\u201d just good teaching?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"4\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The Japan Gamification Association (<a href=\"https:\/\/note.com\/jgamifa\/n\/n1c3217aa37d5\">JGamifa<\/a>) presents these six elements of gamification design:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Active participation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Achievable goal-setting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Praise<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Immediate feedback<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Visible growth<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Welcoming individual creativity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>At first glance these might sound appealing, but none of these are unique to games. They\u2019re simply the basics of good teaching. In that sense, \u201cgamification\u201d is just a rebranding of what good teachers already strive to do. As Bogost argued, this has nothing to do with what makes games special.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, gamification as it is actually implemented is a much narrower concept. Confusing good educational practice for \u201cgame-like\u201d practice risks both misunderstanding games as a cultural form, and distorting the real value of educational work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Case Study: A gamification approach for a programming class with absentee students<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s an example that was shared as a \u201cgamification\u201d idea (where the students are not turning up for classes for some reason).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>1pt for showing up<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>+1pt for showing up on a rainy day<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2pt for helping a friend and making them happy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1pt for publishing a programming project<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>points equal to the number of likes they get<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>&gt; They could earn \u201calt-tokens\u201d this way!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But this is just an alternate form of grading. It\u2019s not a game, and it doesn\u2019t create meaningful change in learning. Simply giving out points won\u2019t solve the social, psychological, or systemic issues behind absenteeism. What\u2019s really needed is listening carefully to the student and their family \u2014 understanding why they can\u2019t attend and what barriers they\u2019re facing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A better alternative: Toward <em>ludic<\/em> pedgogy<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I propose an approach centered on <em>playfulness<\/em> \u2014 what I call <em>ludic pedagogy<\/em>. This draws on two key elements:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Ludic objects:<\/strong> materials or tools designed with play in mind (games are part of this)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ludic practices:<\/strong> the teacher\u2019s own playfulness, flexible lesson design, intentional openness, creative pedagogy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This approach invites teachers to ask: <em>Where can I create room for play within the constraints of my materials and setting?<\/em> The idea is to build a playground within your lessons where students can freely explore. Rather than points, what motivates learners are <em>meaningful choices<\/em> and <em>questions that spark imagination<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About Ludic Objects<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>I use the term <em>ludic objects<\/em> rather than just \u201cgames\u201d because it\u2019s a broader, more inclusive expression. Ludic includes not only digital and analog games, but also activities like storytelling, roleplay, and simulation. This lets us explore and share diverse educational practices without being limited to specific technologies or types of games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Debate<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Digital games<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Drama<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Language play (humor, jokes, poems, riddles, etc.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Live-action role-playing games<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make-believe<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Playful worksheets, activities, and curricula<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Simulations and roleplays<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Storytelling<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tabletop games<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Traditional games (dice games, conversation games, playground games, etc.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Examples<\/strong> of ludic practice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Ludic Practice 1: Pro-gamer inspired assessment<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In my own work, I created a portfolio assessment inspired by pro-gamers\u2019 montage videos. Students submitted their \u201cbest performance\u201d from group work. This was part of an English communication class, and depending on the year, students submitted Google Docs or videos. (One example video is linked below.) The course itself focused on learning English through games, but that\u2019s not really the point \u2014 the assessment was my way of drawing on gaming culture for learning.
